Despite headlines and social media chatter, there is no immediate prohibition on owning, operating, or purchasing DJI agricultural drones in the United States. DJI ag platforms like the T40, T50, and T100 remain legal to sell and operate today. IN FACT two new drones are approved to import. The T70 and T70P! Current discussions are part of an ongoing federal review process, not an enacted shutdown.
Why this matters:
Operators can continue flying, servicing, and investing in DJI equipment without interruption. -
Most proposed actions related to DJI focus on future government procurement or import authorization, not grounding existing aircraft. There has been no directive requiring current owners to stop flying or decommission equipment already in use.
Why this matters:
If you already own DJI equipment or are purchasing now, your operation is not suddenly at risk of being shut down. -
DJI agricultural drones operate under distinct regulatory frameworks, including FAA approvals, Remote ID compliance, and agricultural use exemptions. These platforms are viewed as commercial tools, similar to tractors or sprayers, not consumer electronics or surveillance systems.
Why this matters:
Ag drones are not regulated the same way as recreational or law-enforcement drones, which is where much of the confusion originates. -
Current federal actions related to DJI stem primarily from review and authorization processes, not from an enacted ban on agricultural drone ownership or operation. Measures such as Section 889 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the ongoing review directed through the Federal Communications Commission focus on future authorization and import review, particularly for devices requiring new equipment approvals, rather than grounding existing aircraft or halting lawful commercial use.
In practical terms, this means DJI agricultural drones remain legal to purchase, import, operate, and service today. There is no federal requirement forcing operators to stop flying approved DJI ag platforms, and no mandate requiring existing equipment to be removed from service. DJI continues to release new agricultural models globally, and products already authorized for use remain supported while regulatory reviews continue.
Regulatory processes like these evolve over time, which is why accurate, current information matters more than headlines or speculation.
